Devops: Build your workplace
Often using our machine in workplace, we are stuck with the default Windows OS, often we need to be preparing the environment for working on the Cloud. This article intends to minimize it as much as possible.
Install Powershell
Search for the latest version of PowerShell
winget search Microsoft.PowerShell
Install PowerShell or PowerShell Preview using the id parameter
winget install --id Microsoft.Powershell --source winget
winget install --id Microsoft.Powershell.Preview --source winget
Install WSL
Next suggestion would be installing WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux), and we need to configure it. Open your PowerShell as Admin
wsl --install
Now we need to see the Distro available
wsl --list --online
Choose one from the list
wsl --install -d <DistroName>
Kubectx
choco install kubens kubectx
Terraform version manager
I personally use this https://github.com/tfutils/tfenv. Open up the wsl distro you have installed. Perform a git clone
git clone --depth=1 https://github.com/tfutils/tfenv.git ~/.tfenv
Add ~/.tfenv/bin to your $PATH
echo 'export PATH=$PATH:$HOME/.tfenv/bin' >> ~/.bashrc
After that perform installation of the latest terraform, if you want specific version use the later.
tfenv install latest
or
tfenv install <version>
if you have multiple version of terraform, you can do this
tfenv use 1.4.0
Github cli
This is another feature that I use. Open Powershell and install
choco install gh
Others
Well, I think any cloud environment should be specific to your working environment. You can google AWS, GCP or Azure, or even other minor providers, every cloud provider will have their own commands, but they have a well-documented way to install their CLI
